Making the morning rounds.
• Let's not be hasty, just because of three single-digit performances in conference losses. Urban Meyer vowed to find answers for Florida's moribund offense as the Gators trudge toward the end of the first four-loss regular season of his six-year tenure, but whatever it is, that answer will include the two most hated Gators in recent memory, offensive coordinator Steve Addazio and still-starting quarterback John Brantley. "I don't think that will happen," Meyer said Monday when asked about the chances Addazio will be gone in 2011. "I'm not into blame, I'm not into excuses. We're into solutions right now." Is there any chance the solution could include, say, a couple "bad oysters" on a recruiting trip? [Gainesville Sun]
• Heels on ice. Two more North Carolina players, defensive end Michael McAdoo and fullback Devon Ramsey, have been ruled permanently ineligible for unspecified reasons, bringing the final tally to five Tar Heels on the NCAA's permanent no-fly list since the start of the season. McAdoo was one of the dozen UNC players initially suspended for the opener against LSU and hasn't played all year; Ramsey wasn't forced to sit out until four games into the year, but isn't expected to cost Carolina either of the wins he played in. Both would have had eligibility next season, and the university said it will appeal to get them back. [Associated Press, Charlotte Observer]
• Happy trails. Texas running back Tré Newton, leading rusher on last year's BCS Championship runner-up, is ending his football career after suffering a concussion in the Longhorns' loss at Kansas State two weeks ago, one of "a few" concussions he's suffered since high school. [Austin American-Statesman]
• The long arm of Cecil Newton. The NCAA's ongoing investigation into Auburn quarterback Cam Newton could conceivably cost coach Gene Chizik at least $60,000 a month in personal endorsement rights and media appearances, per a clause in his contract suspending the payments "in the event an investigation is instituted by Auburn, the SEC or the NCAA into alleged major rules violations involving Coach and/or the football program." That number could grow much larger and eventually include Chizik's job if the investigation leads to sanctions against Auburn. [USA Today]
• Have a seat, please. Auburn's not the only team suffering the consequences in its next game for punches thrown on Saturday: Kentucky cornerback Martavius Nelms and Vanderbilt receiver Umoh Udoh will both be suspended for the first half of their next teams' next games – both against Tennessee – taking swings in the fourth quarter of the Wildcats' 38-20 in Lexington. • And I said we will rise up-ah! Sensing negativity in the ranks, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt reverted to fiery revivalist mode Monday to rally the faithful after Saturday's 52-14 debacle at Tennessee dropped the Rebels to 4-6, reminding the congregation who it was who bestowed upon them back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins his first two years: "It's been 50 years since you won back to back January 1 games. Fifty! Fifty!" Remember what your faith hath wrought! The previous coaching staff brought in good players, but did they know how to win? No! Did they get the ball to Michael Wallace, who is currently catching passes for the Pittsburgh Steelers? No! Have we been as sharp, as ready as we should have been? No! Did we plan on blowing the first game to Jacksonville State No! Did we plan on losing our best player to an injury? No! Are we going to hang our heads because our lineup currently includes 12 freshmen? No! Because our final two opponents are a combined 16-5? No! Are we going to sit on the 50-yard line and say, "Bad, bad, bad, bad, embarrassing?" No! You think Florida's happy? No! You think Georgia's happy? No! Am I going to let the players be doom and gloom? No! Do you remember when you were part of something great? Yes! Now, children ... who will find it in their hearts to give to make this mission great again?
