Beer flies, heads are shaved as Borussia win Bundesliga

With two matches left to play, Borussia Dortmund sealed their first Bundesliga title since 2002 thanks to a 2-0 win over Nurnberg on Saturday. And since those three points put them out of Bayer Leverkusen's reach, the giant beer glasses came on to the pitch and brew baths began. Borussia manager Jurgen Klopp got his while giving out hugs, but no one wanted to taste that sweet nectar more than Neven Subutic...

"Once it hits your lips, it's so good!"

So with that part of the celebration covered, there was only one thing left to do...shave some heads! Wait, what?

That's Felipe Santana shaving Kevin Grosskreutz's head. Now, you might think that the middle of a title celebration wouldn't be the best place to take a razor to a teammate's head, but Santana did surprisingly good work.

Perfect haircut.

Friday’s Three Stars: Bolts down Caps; Ferriero plays hero

No. 1 Star: Steve Downie, Tampa Bay Lightning

Having won their final three games against the Pittsburgh Penguins to advance to Round 2, the Lightning made it four in a row with a 4-2 victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 1 of their series. Playing just 11:46, Downie increased his team-high point total to nine with a goal and an assist as a fortunate bounce off Scott Hannan's tied the game at two with 3:43 left in the second period.

No. 2 Star: Benn Ferriero, San Jose Sharks

On his 24th birthday and playing in his first NHL playoff game, Ferriero was the hero as his goal 7:03 into overtime gave the Sharks a 2-1 win and 1-0 series lead over the Detroit Red Wings:

No. 3 Star: Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings

Howard did he all he could to earn the win for Detroit stopping 44 shots, including six of the seven he faced in overtime.

Honorable mention: Steven Stamkos netted the winner for Tampa Bay on the power play with 32 seconds remaining in the second period ... Sean Bergenheim opened the scoring with his fourth goal in five games ... Joe Pavelski delivered another big time goal for the Sharks when he forced overtime with a power play tally with 9:38 left in regulation ... San Jose has won all four of their overtime games in the playoffs ... Jason Demers led all players with five blocked shots ... A day after he turned 41, Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom scored his 51st career playoff goal ... The CSN Bay Area cameras caught the "Ghetto Shark" in the stands at HP Pavilion in this fantastic outfit:

Did you know? The Sharks have won 11 in a row & are 15-1 when Joe Pavelski scores in the playoffs.

Dishonorable mention: Washington went 0-for-5 on the power play ... Simon Gagne had to leave the game after hitting his head on the ice after a hit from Hannan. No diagnosis has been made yet, but Gagne was alert and talking in the locker room according to Lightning GM Steve Yzerman ... Todd Bertuzzi's boarding penalty put San Jose on the power play that led to Pavelski's tying goal.

Conn Smythe Watch: 1. Danny Briere, Philadelphia Flyers, 2. Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings; 3. Ryane Clowe, San Jose Sharks; 4. Michal Neuvirth, Washington Capitals; 5. Daniel Sedin,Vancouver Canucks; 6. Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning; 7. Mike Fisher, Nashville Predators; 8. Nathan Horton, Boston Bruins; 9. Dwayne Roloson, Tampa Bay Lightning; 10. Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers.

Star Power: How recruiting rankings hold up at the top of the NFL Draft

As you know, the first round of the NFL Draft is in the books, which can only mean one thing: It's time for the annual trip into the recruiting archives to get a kick out of how badly the rankings whiffed on today's heroes when they were mere teenage pups. Here's the Cliff's Notes version of Thursday's first-round crop as Rivals saw them as high school prospects three to five years ago:

2011 First-Round Picks by Recruiting Ranking
Click on the player's name to go to his high school recruiting profile.

Five-Star (7): Cam Newton; A.J. Green; Patrick Peterson; Julio Jones; Tyron Smith; Blaine Gabbert; Jonathan Baldwin.
Four-Star (12): Von Miller; Jake Locker; Robert Quinn; Mike Pouncey; Corey Liuget; Adrian Clayborn; Phil Taylor; Danny Watkins; James Carpenter; Mark Ingram; Cameron Heyward; Derek Sherrod.
Three-Star (11): Marcell Dareus; Aldon Smith; Christian Ponder; Nick Fairley; Ryan Kerrigan; Nate Solder; Prince Amukamara; Cameron Jordan; Jimmy Smith; Gabe Carimi; Muhammad Wilkerson.
Two-Star (2): J.J. Watt; Anthony Castonzo.

Even by first round standards, it's a top-heavy group: Six of the top 10 were accorded five-star status as recruits, which is even more impressive when you consider just how few players make up the upper crust in recruiting rankings. Using Rivals' ratings, five-star players make up a little more than one percent of all Division I-A signees every year, and four-star players less than 12 percent; a full 87 percent of incoming players are rated three stars or lower. (In Rivals' system, all DI-A signees are automatically granted two-star status; walk-ons are usually unranked.) But that group produced a grand total of 13 picks Thursday night from a cast of more than 10,000 last year.

Which sounds about right. Based on data from the recruiting classes (2003-08) that have supplied the last five draft classes (2007-11), five-star players go in the first round at a rate of about 1 in 6.5 — that is, one of every 6.5 five-star signees goes on to become a first-rounder — almost 13 times better than the average for all players, which consistently hovers around one first-rounder for every 83 signees across the board. It's a fairly predictable pattern:

The bottom of that graph really doesn't do justice to the huge gulf between the ratio of four-star prospects who go in the first round (roughly 1 in 22, on average) and the ratio of two-star/walk-on players who go in the first round (roughly 1 in 300) but you get the idea: The four and five-star players, a group that makes up a little under 13 percent of the entire population of college players, accounts for just shy of 60 percent of first-rounders.

If that trend looks familiar to regular readers, it should: The distribution of All-Americans in the star system is nearly identical, year after year. Funny how the probabilities never seem to change.

Bolts beat ‘hockey machine’ as Boudreau bemoans ‘river hockey’

WASHINGTON, DC ? Bruce Boudreau was speaking about Steve Downie's tying goal in the Washington Capitals' Game 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, but he might as well have been talking about the entirety of his team's effort to open the Eastern Conference semifinals:

"I'm a firm a believer that, in the end, you get what you deserve."

In the end, the Capitals deserved to lose this game. "I think we play too cute and we took lots of penalties and that cost us," said Alex Ovechkin.

The turnovers. The sloppy drop passes. The lack of quality chances on a power play that that went 0-for-5; and the quality chances they gave a Lightning offense that remained dangerous even after losing Simon Gagne to an upper body injury in the first period.

"You can't play river hockey," said Boudreau after the 4-2 loss on Friday night. "This wasn't the way we play. This was reverting back to an older day [for the Capitals]."

While Boudreau was critical of his team, the Lightning had nothing but praise for the Capitals. Such is the way of playoff psychological warfare.

"They came out real hard. They had their chances. They should have beat us. But we stayed alive," said Bolts winger Steve Downie, whose deflected shot off of Capitals defenseman Scott Hannan knotted the game at 2-2 at 16:17 of the second period before Steven Stamkos's power-play goal at 19:28 gave Tampa the lead for good.

Lightning Coach Guy Boucher echoed his winger's words, while amplified the praise for the Capitals.

"We're surprised [we won], to be honest with you. This is a machine here. It's a hockey machine that's in its fifth year of its plan. They're supposed to win this year," said Boucher. "I think they might be the best team in the league. We're coming here and we're just learning how to win as a team. Half the team hasn't played in the playoffs.

"When you lose Gagne and you're down to 10 forwards, that's when you feel lucky to get out of it."

So the Bolts won Game 1 in a building that has what can best be called "Fan Muscle Memory": Things go badly in the postseason and the tension becomes palpable in the stands. In the third period, down a goal, the Capitals were booed by the home fans on an ineffective power play. The place fell dead silent after Tampa goals.

Do the Lightning feel they've planted a seed of doubt here in Washington about this series? "Maybe," said forward Nate Thompson, "but it's a seven game series. I don't think anybody expects it's going to be a quick series at all."

Boucher didn't believe Game 1 damaged the home team's psyche. "No," he said, "because if you look at the Canadiens, they won the first two games in Boston, and they lost the series.

"To me, it's just one game. We're very well aware of what kind of machine they got."

People care that Becks wore medal wrong at the royal wedding

Well, Davey Becks ruined the royal wedding. He was the only footballer invited to the shindig and he ruined the whole thing. William and Kate will probably get divorced. The United Kingdom will surely crumble. And it's all Davey's fault.

It's been noted numerous other places, but if you haven't heard and you're somehow looking at the above picture of a nicely dressed man standing beside his wife and not seeing the pedantic mistake he made once he put on his custom Ralph Lauren suit, well -- he's wearing his Order of the British Empire medal on the wrong lapel. It's apparently supposed to be on his left lapel and he's wearing it on the right. He was awarded the order in 2003 and it seems he hasn't read the directions for wearing the thing yet.

But in Beckham's defense, this is a whirlwind trip for him. He's flying right back to the U.S. to try and prove he does care about MLS by making an effort to play in the L.A. Galaxy's match in Dallas on Saturday. Which will also be a glamorous event. At Pizza Hut Park.

UPDATE: Rejoice! Because it appears that once Davey got inside Westminster Abbey, someone clued him in on how to wear his OBE medal before the ceremony began...

Still, he pretty much ruined the whole wedding.

Those Urban Meyer-to-Ohio State rumors are starting to bother Urban Meyer’s family

Last year, it sounded like wishful thinking. Last month, it sounded like old-fashioned trollin'. Even last week, it sounded like a bout of senility. But as the NCAA noose begins to tighten and Jim Tressel's future at Ohio State looks less and less certain by the day, it's official: The Urban Meyer-to-Ohio State chatter has gone mainstream.

That's in large part because Meyer happens to be available after walking away from another power gig at Florida last December, and in even larger part because there couldn't bea more perfect fit in Columbus if Tressel gets the ax: Meyer grew up in Ohio, went to school in Ohio (Cincinnati) and landed his first graduate assistant job at Ohio State, where he picked up a master's degree and a wife. Who also grew up in Ohio. He's made no secret of his admiration of former Buckeye coach Earle Bruce, who served as an important father figure early in Meyer's career. There is no good reason ?if the job happens to come open, and we are not saying it will ? that Meyer wouldn't be at the top of the list to fill it, and wouldn't give it a long, serious thought.

In the meantime, his daughter Nicki politely requests that you shut up about it:

Girl, please, like a denial is going to stop anybody. Remember: Your dad said the same thing about those Urban-to-Notre Dame rumors before Charlie Weis was fired in 2009, too. And look how that turned out.

Florida booted its best player for a pot arrest. Are Muschamp’s Gators going to be less 420-friendly?

Welcome, Florida fans, to the first official "Will Muschamp is Not Urban Meyer" moment of the new administration at the expense of your starting defense: Senior cornerback Janoris Jenkins, a three-year starter and All-SEC pick who by all accounts passed on a first-round projection in this week's draft to return to school, has been officially booted from the team in the wake of his second marijuana arrest in four months. The misdemeanor charge Jenkins picked up over the weekend was the third arrest of his college career, and leaves the Gators at the mercy of three new starters in the secondary ? one of whom may now very well be a true freshman. Total buzz kill.

It also marks an apparent shift in weed wariness in Gainesville, which had earned a reputation under Meyer as one of the most weed-friendly programs in the country. Former cornerback Wondy Pierre-Louis told the Orlando Sentinel last year that he guessed 75 percent of the 2008 BCS championship team got high on at least a semi-regular basis, presumably including stars Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez, who were both plagued by rumors of multiple failed drug tests going into the draft.

Another future first-round pick, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, remained in the fold after failing at least two drug tests in 2006. (Thomas was eventually kicked off the team that November, according to him, for breaking curfew, going on an unapproved out-of-town trip and missing a mandatory drug-education class, but said at the time he didn't fail a third test.) Of the four Gators arrested for marijuana possession between 2005 and 2009, none served more than a brief suspension following the arrest, though two of them ? cornerback Jacques Rickerson and lineman Ronnie Wilson ? were later booted for more serious charges. Already this year, two other Gators, Chris Martin and Kedric Johnson, picked up marijuana charges in January, and remain on the team.

As far as I can tell, then, Jenkins is the first of many pot-loving Gators whose indulgence has actually cost him a spot on the team in at least six years. If Muschamp is determined to get that "75 percent" number down, even behind closed doors, booting a first-round draft pick is a good way to get there. It may not be so good for the win column, but you know, everybody has to choose their battles.

Headlinin’: Did Pelini’s pay raise come with an eye on the Buckeyes?

Making the morning rounds.

? Just a little insurance. Bo Pelini's latest contract extension not only makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten at nearly $3 million per year and extends his obligation to Nebraska through 2015: It also makes it even less likely that he'll consider leaving for Ohio State if Jim Tressel gets the ax in Columbus. Pelini is an Ohio native (he attended Youngstown's Cardinal Mooney High, which has close ties to OSU) and was repeatedly connected to the Miami job last December — around the time his bosses decide he might be worth keeping around a little while longer, occasional outbursts notwithstanding. We all know he'd have to wrestle Urban Meyer for the Buckeye job, anyway. [Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World Herald]

? Don't think that I'm out of line for speaking out for what is mine. The NCAA has approved a hardship request by Ole Miss quarterback Barry Brunetti, allowing the former West Virginia transfer to compete for the Rebels' starting job this fall without spending the usual transfer season on the bench. Brunetti came out of Memphis last year as one of the top "dual threat" quarterbacks in the 2010 recruiting class, but didn't see the field in Morgantown as a true freshman and decided to move closer to his mother, whose health has reportedly grown progressively worse since a car accident in 2002.

As for the quarterback derby, junior Randall Mackey looked like the clear leader of a four-man rotation (now down to three) for most of the spring, but Brunetti had a better spring game and finally sheds the lingering question mark about his availability going into the summer. [Clarion-Ledger]

? Work with us here. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is reportedly "lobbying hard" to convince television networks to push kickoff times back by an hour, mainly for the benefit of schools in the Central time zone that regularly kick at 11 a.m. and would like more travel and tailgating time. The main drawback, other than filling up an extra hour of airtime in the morning: Later midday kicks means later afternoon kicks, which could be equally inconvenient for fans after the sun goes down. [Quad City Times]

? I thought we said not in the face! Mississippi State receiver Chris Smith is scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair a broken jaw he suffered in an apparent altercation in Meridian, Miss., over the weekend. It's not clear whether there's a police report in the incident; coach Dan Mullen said he's "still investigating all the events around what happened" but doesn't expect Smith to miss any workout time this summer. [Clarion-Ledger]

? This one's optimistic. Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers defensive lineman who was paralyzed from the neck down during a game last October, told reporters on Monday that he believes he was specifically chosen to overcome a test and guaranteed he would walk again. "There is a reason why it happened, that's what I truly believe," LeGrand said. "I was picked for this to happen to. Some people can't go through injuries like this, it would just put them down. I just believe God put me through this because he knows I can fight through this." [Associated Press]

Quickly… Comparing Mark Ingram to Emmitt Smith. … A sympathetic look at Marvin Austin from his hometown paper, which does not sound like an easy assignment. … Florida State lands a verbal commitment from a 330-pound lineman. … Former Michigan cornerback Cullen Christian is landing at Pittsburgh. … "I distinctly remember, I was kicking a 35-yard field goal, it's dead silent in the Big House, I'm on the left hash, Purdue is over here, and I just hear one guy go, 'He's going to miss it.'" … And who knew Ray Drew is really into Charlie Daniels?

Robert Quinn goes to St. Louis Rams with 14th pick in NFL Draft

Pros: Gets off the snap with impressive speed (especially for his size at 6-foot-5, 268 pounds) and employs the full array of pass-rush moves — can use a rip move while getting outside a tackle, move quickly into his arc, get low on his turn, and close to the quarterback. Relentless once he gets started, especially with his explosiveness. Good upper-body strength allows him to avoid being ridden out of plays — pass or run — by stronger blockers. Closes inside the tackle pretty well, though he needs to develop better footwork and angle fakes. Can bull-rush the strongest blockers at times.

In short-yardage situations, Quinn has a good head for avoiding overpursuit, instead watching the quarterback and potentially either stopping a sneak or batting a ball down. He's not a one-trick pony. When Quinn loops inside at a wider angle, he overwhelms weaker guards and centers, easily splitting double-teams. In a short area, he can also blast by the guard's outside shoulder. Slides off blockers quickly to make run tackles in the backfield; it's very important to note that Quinn can do more than just pressure the quarterback.

Cons: When he's playing wide off the snap, it's easy to box him out because Quinn doesn't re-set in short spaces the way the best pass rushers do. He seems intent on staying on one track. Doesn't have a spin move per se, though again, the potential is there for Quinn to mess people up if he develops one.

What he brings to the team: Many of the technique gaps Quinn presented in 2009 most likely would have been solved in 2010, had he been able to play and receive coaching. Now, the questions surrounding his NFL potential are twofold: it's not only about how he looks more than a year past his last gameday snaps, but also whether he's developed any new moves that he can show off in Indianapolis and at his pro day.

We all have opinions about a system that makes millions of dollars off the efforts of its athletes and can end a collegiate career after a kid accepts $5,000 in gifts, but Robert Quinn can't worry about that. He's got to prove that he's not just the player people saw in 2008 and 2009, but has developed in a year of working out away from the day-to-day discipline players have in a team setting. If he can do that, Quinn could very well be one of the top ends in the game over time.

Is it the right pick? To be blunt, it's a ridiculous steal, and every team in the NFC West just thought long and hard about their offensive tackle situation. Putting Chris Long and Robert Quinn alongside each other might just be illegal.

Danny Watkins is going to the draft, and his old Canadian firefighter buddies are coming with him

At some point, most boys dream of growing up to be firemen or professional football players. Few ever become either one. Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins, a former firefighter and soon-to-be NFL draft pick, is about to accomplish both ?though in his case, the football part came as something of an accident.

Like all red-blooded Canadians, Watkins grew up in Kelowna, British Columbia, playing hockey, not football. At 16, he volunteered at the local fire department for school credit, mainly to get out of class. He stuck with it, and at 18 graduated to the paid-on-call program to become a full-time firefighter. At 22, his captain suggested Watkins enroll in a course in fire science at Butte Community College in California, where the new 6-foot-4, 290-pound kid on campus couldn't hide from the football coaches for long. After two years at Butte, he moved on to Baylor, replacing left tackle Jason Smith, the No. 2 overall pick in 2009. After two years in Waco, he was voted second-team All-Big 12 by league coaches, and is widely expected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick later this month.

That's how Watkins suddenly finds himself invited to New York City for the draft proceedings at the relatively ripe age of 26, and why five Canadian firefighters are coming with him, per the Toronto Sun:

Now, 10 years later, Watkins is showing his great affection for some of the West Kelowna firefighters who helped mould his personal and professional life by inviting them to be with him in New York.

"They're guys you'd never forget," Watkins said Wednesday. "I'm bringing five altogether. They're the guys who have been with me since the beginning, when I was just a young, immature kid. They've taught me a lot ... they've become very close friends. I wish I could bring a lot more of them, but I don't have a lot of money yet."

[…]

"I was pretty excited when Danny phoned me," says Wayne Schnitzler, West Kelowna's fire chief. "Everybody is pretty excited about the big event. Not many people are going to have the opportunity to sit in on an NFL draft. We're truly honoured to be part of Danny's big day."

At least he's not too humble to leave off the "yet" when he's referring to his bank account. Depending on how the NFL's ongoing labor impasse plays out, he'll be able to outfit the entire department with a fleet of gleaming new trucks by the end of the year. And if by any chance some ill-considered player protest starts to get out of hand, there are already professionals on the scene.

Coming Attractions: Bryce Brown, Kansas State’s prodigal, blue-chip son

Assessing 2011's most intriguing players, in no particular order. Today: Kansas State sophomore running back Bryce Brown.

? Typecasting. Bryce Brown left Tennessee last year as he lived there: Quietly, without a word to the media and barely any with his new head coach. But for a guy who didn't say much of anything before, during or after his brief stint in Knoxville, the image of Brown from his time there ? as an attention-seeking, entitled diva who surrounded himself with shady characters, milked the recruiting process for all it was worth, failed to live up to the advance hype on the field and bailed out at the first sign of adversity ?isn't going to go easily. In Tennessee, he'll always be a symbol of the sizzling noises Lane Kiffin and Co. made in the kitchen before they snuck out the back door without producing a single steak.

The buzz certainly hasn't followed him home to Kansas, where he toiled in relative obscurity last fall as an ineligible transfer. By all appearances, though, neither has the self-absorbed rap: In Manhattan, Brown and his former five-star brother, Arthur, are still the hometown heroes, the most coveted blue-chips ever to come out of the Sunflower State or to suit up for either of its major programs, even if it took a detour through heavier-hitting programs (Arthur initially signed with Miami) to bring them back. With three years of eligibility still in front of him and most of the drama apparently in the rearview, there's nothing stopping Bryce from being the player the scouts imagined him to be except Bryce. Well, Bryce and a somewhat rebuilding offensive line, but mainly Bryce.

? Best-Case. Quaint as it seems now, there was a reason Brown was the most prized running back in America coming out of high school:

Two years on, he's bringing his powerful 6-foot, 220-pound frame to an offense that's no stranger to transfers or big backs: Outgoing 225-pounder Daniel Thomas led the Big 12 in carries and rushing yards two years in a row out of junior college, with a league-best 19 touchdowns last year as a senior and 13 career 100-yard games to his credit. Within the conference, only Nebraska ran the ball more often, and the Cornhuskers split their carries evenly between three different backs; K-State leaned overwhelmingly on Thomas, with a little help from a pair of alternating quarterbacks, to the extent he eventually logged about seven times as many carries for the year (298) as the rest of the running backs combined (42, mostly in garbage time). Brown is cut from the same slab of marble and is in line to become the same kind of 20-carry-per-game workhorse, with (reportedly) another gear in the open field.

It's worth noting, too, that had he stayed at Tennessee, Brown's modest freshman campaign might seem less like a disappointing debut by a burgeoning bust than typical growing pains by a newcomer feeling his way into the lineup behind a productive veteran. Brown only carried the ball 55 times against SEC opponents, for 211 yards and one touchdown, but attempts weren't all that easy to come by in the same backfield with Montario Hardesty, who churned out well over 1,600 yards from scrimmage in 2009 and was snapped up in the second round of the draft. At the very least, he hasn't had enough opportunity yet to really fail.

? Worst-Case. After a 101-yard debut against helpless Western Kentucky, Brown didn't do much in those carries to cash in on his hypothetical potential: Outside of a 34-yard gain against WKU, he only covered 20 yards on a carry once over the next 10 games, on a 37-yarder against South Carolina. By November, he was barely touching the ball at all, and sat out the bowl game entirely due to a concussion. Two years into his career, you still have to go back to his recruiting reel to justify the attention.

Given the mediocre start, it doesn't say much for what's left of Brown's breakout potential that he's allegedly being pushed hard this spring by diminutive sophomore John Hubert, whose packing enough wallop into his 5-7, 185-pound frame for coach Bill Snyder to suggest with a straight face that he's competing with Brown for full-time duty at the top of the depth chart. Even as an idle, motivational threat, it sounds like an admission that the new big man on campus hasn't opened any eyes there yet.

? Fun Fact. Brown graduated high school a semester early, in December 2008, but instead of enrolling early at Miami (where he had verbally committed before his senior season) for spring practice, he spent most of the next few months dodging the recruiting sites and ? according to his "mentor," Brian Butler ?fasting over his decision. That's part of the reason it took so long:

"It's basically denying your flesh some of your habits, like eating, to try to let God work through you and to be able to be closer to him," says Brown's mentor, Brian Butler. "It allows you to meditate and hear what he has to say, basically."

Brown, who already has graduated from Wichita (Kan.) East, has never promoted he's fasting to come up with a final choice. Butler said he doesn't plan on divulging the length of Brown's fast.

"When it comes to the Bible, what they try to tell you is really don't promote when you're doing it," Butler said. "This is how we feel it helps you make a good decision, when you have an important one to make.

"That's really the purpose of it. Really, the only reason we let anybody know is because Bryce and his parents still believe that if more kids do this from a spiritual standpoint, it'll help them make the right decision. I know one of Bryce's goals in the future is actually to hold seminars or classes when it comes to the decision-making process from a spiritual standpoint."

Yeah, if the seminar's still on the agenda, Bryce might want to leave off the whole "de-commit from Miami for a surprise signature with Tennessee, only to leave on not-very-amicable terms less than a year later" part off the brochure.

? What to expect in the fall. Brown probably thought he'd be on the verge of the NFL at this point in career, but the reality is he's still very early on the curve with a lot of room to grow. Given his obvious talent and natural fit in the Wildcat offense, there's no reason not to expect him to fill Thomas' shoes as a reliable, every-down, 1,000-yard thumper. There's no reason to expect him to stand out or lift the rest of the offense to a different level, either, but honestly, if we were talking about almost anyone else, commanding 18-20 carries per game as a first-year sophomore starter would sound pretty good.

Placido Polanco is playing like he’s 25 instead of 35 as a four for five day against the Diamondbacks brought his average up to .389. Federer, Sampras and the most awkward high five ever

This picture is from last year, but please don't let that detract from its sublime dorkiness.

My only regret is that we'll never know how it ended. Did Federer switch to the dap just as Sampras opened his palm, thus starting an embarrassing ballet of mixed-up hand celebrations? Did one of the tennis greats sense the impending awkwardness and contort his hand in time? Or was the unorthodox fist-in-hand used and then unconvincingly passed off as the intended outcome?

Who would want to break into USC’s compliance office? Who wouldn’t?

Warm up the bloodhound and the magnifying glass: USC's department of public safety confirmed today that an apparent burglar ransacked the inside of USC's athletic compliance office in late March, even as the Trojans continue to wait on the result of their last-ditch appeal to the NCAA to reduce the heavy-handed sanctions dropped on the football and basketball teams last summer. So many suspects! So many motives!

Could it have been Pete Carroll or Tim Floyd, in search of some secret file that will exonerate his tarnished legacies as head coaches? Reggie Bush, on the prowl for the address of his lost Heisman Trophy? Lloyd Lake, on the prowl for the sake of being on the prowl? Mike Garrett, who's pretty sure he left his keys somewhere around here? Lane Kiffin, with the candlestick? Todd McNair, in the conservatory, with Faison Love? Someone from outside the program, perhaps, bent on sabotage?

Or could it have been … uh, some guy looking to score a free debit card for a quick spree:

The break-in occurred March 29 and according to campus security reports obtained by the website, a debit card was taken from an employee's desk. The employee later learned that three purchases were made on the stolen card before he canceled the card.

Well then … I suppose that means another case closed. Good work, everyone!

Bidding for UCLA’s historic center circle approaches $100,000

If you have a passion for college basketball, a bare wall in your living room and a spare $100,000 to burn, there's a historic piece of memorabilia for sale this week that may be of interest.

Why not put in a bid on the original center circle from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion?

The 12-foot-diameter powder-blue-and-gold relic, which served as center court during the height of the John Wooden dynasty, had been in storage for years until the undisclosed UCLA alum who owned it decided to put it on the auction block this month. According to Dan Imler of SCP Auctions, the price of the circle reached $94,948 as of Tuesday afternoon with bidding set to close at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"Usually things like this really start to heat up in the final days, particularly the last day of the auction," Imler said. "Interest has been strong so far, but we certainly think it has a long ways to go."

That the center circle is up for auction at all is a source of frustration for UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero, who believes it should be prominently displayed at soon-to-be renovated Pauley Pavilion when the building opens again in 2012. Guerrero released a statement last month indicating he was "extremely disappointed" that UCLA's attempts to reacquire the center circle were unsuccessful.

"We even had a donor ready to make a donation to the owner's charity of choice," Guerrero said. "The center circle belongs on display at new Pauley Pavilion and we are hopeful that we will be able to work out an arrangement with the new owner to bring this important piece of UCLA basketball history back to its home."

In addition to the center circle being in use during UCLA's record 88-game win streak from 1971 to '74, what makes the piece particularly special are the autographs it features. Many UCLA greats who played on that court signed the center circle, from Bill Walton, to Walt Hazzard, to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Imler would not disclose the identity of the seller, but a 1998 UCLA faculty newsletter reveals that a former Bruin student and employee found the center circle collecting dust in a warehouse on campus. Jody Spillane, the former wife of UCLA All-American Jim Spillane, bought the historic hardwood for what the story deemed "a nominal amount."

According to Imler, a large portion of the proceeds from the current sale will be dedicated to funding medical research. Then whoever the winning bidder is will have to decide where to display the center circle, whether that's at the new Pauley Pavilion or in his living room.

Welcome Oregon’s inevitable entry to this spring’s camo uniform line

Naturally, it took Army to breathe life into the first all-camouflage football uniforms last October, but once it was out there, there was no way other schools weren't going to rush to appropriate the military motif for themselves. And there was no way one of those schools wasn't going to be Oregon.

Ohio State beat the always fashion-conscious Ducks to the punch with a handful of camo-print helmets OSU intends to auction off for charity after Saturday's spring game. Instead of just pulling out any old thing from what must by now be a massive warehouse of once-worn threads it considers a closet, Oregon will introduce its own take on military appreciation on April 30 with camouflage jerseys (at least ? the full uniforms haven't been released) decorated with ribbons and achievements from across the branches, a significant expansion on last year's "Support Our Troops" theme. And that's not all! For the low, low price of just $27.95, fans can also own their very own "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" T-shirts in black or white, with a portion of the proceeds going to support families of armed forces serving overseas.

It will also be the first time in more than a decade that most Americans purport to approve of what Oregon is wearing for a change ?and probably the last, pending the arrival of whatever crime against old-fashioned good taste the Ducks have planned for the runway the gridiron this fall. Haters gonna hate, but they'll come around someday. Slowly but surely.
